School Uniform Guidelines for Pre-JK to Grade 6 Students at River Valley School
Standard Uniform (Required):
The standard uniform must be worn on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays.
Formal Dress Uniform (Required):
The full-dress uniform is required on Wednesdays, as well as for the first day of school, concerts, assemblies, photo days, and other special occasions communicated by the school. A tartan item (e.g., tie, skirt, jumper) must be worn on all formal days. *Students in Pre-JK, JK, and Kindergarten are not required to wear a tie.
Comfort Uniform Fridays (Optional):
On Fridays, students can choose from a variety of casual uniform options, including crested sweatshirts, leggings, and tracksuits.
Gym Strip (Grades 3 – 6 Only):
Students in Grades 3-6 must wear the gym strip for physical education classes.

What about footwear?
We know that comfortable, well-fitting footwear plays an important role in helping students stay active, focused, and ready to learn. While comfort is important, we ask families to support our uniform expectations by selecting shoes that align with the school’s guidelines and help students take pride in representing our community.
Students are required to have:
- One (1) pair of black shoes. These shoes do not have to be polishable, but must be full black with no visible logos
- One (1) pair of non-marking running shoes for the gymnasium
- Daily outdoor shoes appropriate for the weather (no flip-flops or crocs please)
Uniform Expectations
- Students are expected to wear approved River Valley School uniform items each day. Non-uniform clothing is only permitted on designated casual days.
- Students in Grades 3–6 must bring a clean RVS gym strip (navy shirt and navy athletic shorts) each week.
- Skirts, skorts, dresses, and tunics should be an appropriate school length and worn with modesty shorts, tights, or leggings underneath.
- Leggings may be worn under uniform dresses, skirts, skorts, and tunics but are not a substitute for uniform pants.
- On cooler days, only approved uniform layers (cardigans, sweaters, sweater vests, fleece jackets, and track jackets) may be worn.
- Field trip attire may vary depending on the activity and will be communicated by teachers in advance.
- Families requiring uniform accommodations for documented medical, sensory, or other individual needs are encouraged to contact the Principal before the start of the school year.
How many uniform pieces do we need?
Every family is different, but many families find the following works well:
- 3 – 5 polo shirts tops (can be white or navy, long sleeve or short sleeve)
- 3 – 4 bottoms
- 1 – 2 sweaters or vests
- 1 – 2 formal uniform outfits (Pre-JK, JK, and Kindergarten are not required to wear a tie.)
- Modesty Shorts, tights, leggings or knee high socks to go with all skirts or jumpers
- 2 Gym strip sets (required for Gr. 3-6)
- Optional – crewneck sweatshirt, track pant, and track jacket
Keeping Used Uniforms out of the Landfill
At River Valley School, we’re committed to ensuring that used uniforms don’t end up in the landfill. Gently used items can be dropped off with Ms. Lori at Reception for reuse within our school community. For pieces that are no longer wearable, we work closely with local organizations and the City of Calgary to support responsible fabric recycling.
