Oh The Places You’ll Go: Adventures with RVS Field Trips

RVS students have been busy soaking in knowledge outside the classroom! Grade Four students had a fantastic morning at Telus Spark this month, captivated by a “Live from Pluto” presentation and took in all of the interactive centres throughout the building. They also had a blast learning speed skating skills and even cheered on professional athletes as they practiced for the world speed skating championship.

On a recent trip to the Ukrainian Centre, the Grade Three class applied their social studies unit on a field trip to the Ukrainian centre in Calgary learning about Ukrainian culture, history, and traditions. They learned through stories, activities, and even learned to count to five in Ukrainian!

At Fish Creek Park, Grade Five students engaged in various weather observations, using tools like thermometers, compasses, barometers, and anemometers. It was a beautiful day of outdoor learning and exploration, they even managed to spot a deer!

What ties all these trips together? Student learning!

These excursions allow students to experience things first-hand and from primary resources, complementing the theoretical knowledge gained in the classroom.

Field trips are an essential aspect of our educational approach at River Valley School. They provide a unique opportunity for students to engage with the world around them, fostering hands-on learning and real-world experiences. These trips are more than just a break from routine; they are a pivotal part of our curriculum that enhances classroom learning. Real-world exploration sharpens students’ critical thinking skills. Being visual learners, field trips enable students to touch, feel, and listen to what they are learning, making the educational experience more tangible and memorable.
